We’ve come a long way, baby…but we still have a long way to go. It’s hard to believe that less than a hundred years ago women were still fighting for the right to vote. Now we are obtaining advanced degrees in record numbers and running companies. With all this progress it’s easy to become complacent, but the reality is we are far behind where we should be in so many aspects of our lives.
Sexual harassment and violence are still prevalent in society, and though we are seeing more pushback and progress in this area than ever before, it is still an unfortunate reality of daily life for many women. We know the fear we feel when a man on the street shouts something lewd or makes kissing sounds. We know the terror of having to fight off unwelcome advances, especially when those advances come from people who have power over us. We know the horror of being grabbed at or assaulted and the feeling of always having to be on guard. Do men think that what they are doing is harmless, or are they intentionally trying to make us unsettled, to let us know who is still in charge? Whatever the intention, the result is that women have to be in a state of constant vigilance, and such a state is exhausting, both mentally and physically.
So what is the solution? If only it were that easy. The truth is there are no easy solutions, but there are steps we can begin taking to let the world know we aren’t going to be victims anymore. This is our moment. This is our time. Fear will not reign in our lives anymore. It’s time for us to be bold. We will boldly confront sexism, misogyny, and harassment of all forms, standing up for ourselves and our fellow women. We will no longer hide, shrug it off, or tell ourselves that if we just ignore it then it will eventually go away. Now is the time, and we can all work together to make a difference.
So be bold. Be brave. Be fearless. Guardian is here to help you. We’ve got your back.
